In US History, students are learning about 20th Century Chicago history. We started by learning about different European immigrant groups who came and settled on the West Side and other parts of the city. Last week we looked at the Great Migration, which brought African American families from the South up to Chicago and other cities in the North. This week we’re looking at Latino immigration to Chicago, especially the displacement of Puerto Ricans from Lincoln Park to Humboldt Park during the urban renewal program of the 1960’s. We’ll be analyzing maps and newspaper stories and continuing to work to understand our city better. Just a few weeks left!

In World Studies we will be diving into the land of the rising sun! Our students have spoken and we listened, they want to learn about Japan! From sushi to wars, kimonos to gardens, from empire to world power, we will cover as much as possible before the end of the school year. Students are going to be engaging with multiple forms of media and will have opportunities to let their creativity shine through. April was filled with gloomy weather and it is time to explore the beauty of the world. Make sure to ask your students what they are enjoying about this unit, and if you can or want to potentially try out some sushi over the next couple of weeks as a family!
We are going to finish strong and hopefully as more well-rounded people of the world!
